6th Grade English Language Arts


A six grade Language Arts student should be able to interpret information from all forms of communication. Topics that are covered in
NCSCOS 6th grade goals are written language, oral language, informational, argumentative, critical, and literary purpose. Although personal expression is stressed at this grade level, a student should learn grammar rules to become an effective writer.



Goal 1
The learner will use language to communicate their personal point of view and life experiences.

1.01 Tell an expressive story (fictional of autobiographical) which:

  • has an organized structure appropriate for its purpose, audience, and context.
  • tells a story or the importance of an event or set of events.
  • includes details and descriptions.
  • uses various styles (e.g. dialogue, suspense, and expressions).

1.02 The student will discuss materials that are read, heard, and/or viewed by:

  • studying the characteristics of the specific work.
  • identifying literary devices used.
  • making connections.
  • predicting.
  • identifying the main idea and/or significance of the work.
  • creating a journal.
  • talking about print and non-print works.

1.03 The learner will cooperative appropriately in groups by:

  • being attentive.
  • contributing comments.
  • asking questions.

1.04 The learner will reflect on personal learning experiences by:

  • elaborating on their personal gain.
  • discussing changes.



Goal 2
The learner will explore and examine information from various sources

2.01 The learner will study and discuss material read, heard, and/or viewed.

  • making connections between the main ideas of different works.

2.02 The learner will create information materials through using multiple sources of print and non-print information.
  • discovering and recovering information
  • becoming aware of primary and secondary sources.
  • discussing the appropriate way to display the information.



Goal 3
The learner will study the basis of argumentative works.

3.01 The learner will explore argumentative works to which they have been introduced by means of:

  • comprehension.
  • characterization.
  • making predictions.

3.02 The learner will study the problem solution process by:

  • presented examples.

3.03 The learner will discover arguments that raise up through:
  • examples of a work's clear idea.
  • discussion of relevant support.
  • the use of evaluative technique.



Goal 4
The learner will use critical thinking skills to assess author's purpose, communication techniques, and attitude of critic, in both print and non-print materials.

4.01 The learner will determine the author's purpose by:

  • checking for understanding.
  • analyzing emotions.
  • identifying hidden themes.

4.02 The learner will gain understanding of the quality of communication by:

  • discussing the development of communication.
  • predicting the outcome based on contextual information.
  • taking into account the possible consequences.

4.03 The learner will play the role of a critic by:

  • studying different view-points.
  • staying open-minded.
  • creating a review on the work.



Goal 5
The learner will interpret and evaluate various works in different genres through discussing and interpreting different literary techniques and characteristics.

5.01 To increase comprehension, the learner will participate in literacy programs, such as:

  • participating in class seminars.
  • discussing literary elements
  • analyzing characters and relationships.

5.02 The learner will explore characteristics of literary genres through:
  • studying a variety of literature.
  • analyzing works of literature.
  • characterizing and classifying various works.



Goal 6
The learner will employ grammar rules and language usage.

6.01 The learner will show understanding of written and spoken language through:

  • discussing the affects of dialect.
  • using a variety of sentence structures.


6.02 The learner will identify and correct errors in written and spoken English by:

  • using proofreading symbols.
  • becoming familiar with everyday errors.
  • reviewing grammar rules.
